A very wet coincidence leads fourteen-year-old Donia to the photographer Iris and her Icelandic horses, of which the elderly pinto Gyrðir soon becomes Donia's friend.
She also likes the dun mare, which belongs to Iris' brother Robert but unfortunately has no papers and is therefore to be sold.
Donia's secret research into the mare's origins leads her onto an important lead. But she won't talk to anyone about it for the time being. Until it's almost too late.
Donia at the Islandhof
Donia, now nineteen years old, spends a summer alone looking after her friend Iris' small Icelandic horse farm. She looks after the horses' well-being and goes on a short trail ride. A ride with detours, as angry farmers whose fields were trampled by horses' hooves have closed many bridle paths.
But that's not the only problem this summer, because Donia also has to experience what it can mean to not leave a friend alone, even in the worst situation.
Donia, Iceland and the consequences
In her early twenties, Donia can finally fulfill a dream and travel to Landsmót Hestamanna, the largest horse meeting in Iceland. A bus tour then takes her across the impressive interior, and the highlight of her trip is that she spends three weeks on a horse farm in the North Country.
From there she brings a self-confident friend with her to Germany. But her heart remains in Iceland, and things also happen in her immediate surroundings that lead to unexpected changes in her life.
